It’s the line “It won’t just be Killua and me…and Gon that will die” that convinces me 100% that he truly believes it too. More than Gon, more than Alluka, more than his parents, anyone. Like, this scene shows that he really thinks Killua loves him more than anyone else. Like, of course he shows no interest in understanding how people outside the family think, but he doesn’t even understand how Killua thinks at all. His failure to understand and take into account a person’s actual personality makes him a poor manipulator.
Killua gets special treatment because he’s family, but even then Illumi relies on the commands he instilled in Killua himself more than any insecurities he naturally has.
